Symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) is the main disease that resulted from taking Fen-Phen in any of its forms. While heart valve damage also occurred, PPH is the more common side effect.
The initial symptoms of PPH include shortness of breath, chest pain, new heart murmur, fatigue, fainting, and lightheadedness. These are rather common symptoms. The symptoms of PPH are indicative of a variety of health problems and diseases. In addition, the symptoms are common among overweight people and are commonly attributed to being “out of shape.” This incorrect assumption causes the disease to be overlooked in the early stages. A consequence of this is that there is a delay in diagnosis and treatment. Because PPH is a progressive disease, this is a problem. Progressive diseases get worse as time goes on.
The later symptoms of PPH are bluish lips and skin, ankle and lower leg swelling, increased chest pain, and death. When the median life expectancy after diagnosis is 3 to 4 years after diagnosis, time is of the essence.
The most common symptom is an increase in the pulmonic second heart sound. This can only be found during a physical examination. An enlargement of the pulmonary artery is common as well but this can only be found with a chest x-ray. Because of this, it is important to receive regular physical examinations. They are a good idea for everyone but are even more important if an individual has taken Fen-Phen.
If you or someone you know has taken Fen-Phen, you may be at risk for Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. If you have been diagnosed with PPH, there may be legal options available to you.
