St. John's Wort and PPH
What is St. John’s Wort?
St. John’s wort is a type of plant with yellow flowers that was originally used in ancient Greece as an herbal remedy for many medical conditions. The plant tends to bloom in late June, near the time of the feast of St. John the Baptist, which explains the origin of the plant’s name.
St. John’s wort can be used to treat mental disorders, as well as depression, sleep disorders, and anxiety. St. John’s wort may negatively interact with other drugs, so it is important to not mix it with any other medications. While many believe that the herb helps to treat depression, the effectiveness of the herb has not been proven.
What is PPH?
Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) occurs when increased blood pressure causes the heart’s veins and arteries to narrow, leading to dizziness, shortness of breath, and fainting. Left untreated, primary pulmonary hypertension can lead to serious heart conditions, including heart failure.
What is the Connection?
While many people believe that St. John’s wort is an effective herbal remedy for various health concerns, it has also been linked to the development of PPH. Recent medical studies show that the use of St. John’s wort or other herbal supplement pills increases a person’s risk of developing the dangerous medical conditions associated with PPH.
